Ayumi To Represent Rimmel In Asia

Ayumi Hamasaki has been chosen to represent popular London-based cosmetics brand Rimmel, joining Kate Moss, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, and Lily Cole. Ayumi will be the brand’s first “image character” in Asia.

Founded in 1834, Rimmel’s products are now readily available in 56 countries around the globe. By appointing Ayumi as the brand’s newest face, Rimmel hopes that her beauty and popularity can help capture more of the Asian market. She is already a fashion leader in Japan and has served as a model for other major brands.

Starting in early August, the singer will begin appearing in advertisements throughout Asia. In particular, the initial ads will use Ayumi’s attention-catching eyes to promote the eye color product “Sparkling Gradation Eyes,” set to go on sale in Japan on August 7.

“I’ve never been to England, so I’d like to use this an opportunity to go there,” Ayumi said.

Famous Japanese Names To Boost Business In China? June 23rd, 2009

Famous Japanese Names To Boost Business In China?

You know it’s understandable that many business owners would love to have famous celebrities to promote their business. However, how far would you go to give your business a boost it needs to generate sales?

In China, there’s apparently a lot of Chinese entrepreneurs seeking to use the names of many popular Japanese celebrities to market their own business. It may not be illegal in China; however it is very disrespectful, especially if the Japanese celebrities have not given any form of consent. The Chinese government doesn’t allow their residents to use well-known names in foreign countries as trademark, but has yet to apply the same law to names of well-known celebrities.

Most Japanese celebrities whose names have been sought as private brands in China are also popular in the country, according to the Trademark Office of the Chinese State Administration for Industry and Commerce.

Hamasaki’s name was registered by a company in Guangdong Province and a person in Hunan Province, as the brands of stationery and a fitness club, respectively, the office’s website shows.

But anonymous comments on the website are full of complaints against the use of Hamasaki’s name.

An individual in Hubei Province also obtained the right to use the name of Japanese pop singer Namie Amuro as a brand for apparel while several people registered the name of table tennis player Ai Fukuhara, who played the sport with Chinese President Hu Jintao when he visited Japan last year.

Applications for trademark registration were also made for veteran Japanese actor Ken Takakura and pop singer Mika Nakashima.

Even if you use one’s name to promote a business, it can cause problems if the name is used for unlawful or harmful purposes. How do you feel about this?

Charts: Arashi all the way
Arashi‘s newest single, “Ashita no Kioku / Crazy Moon,” easily topped the charts this past week, selling more than 502,000 copies. This marks their 15th consecutive number-one single and 22nd overall. It is also their second single in a row to sell over 500,000 in the first week, a feat that has not been achieved since Keisuke Kuwata in 2001.

GReeeeN’s “Haruka” picked up the #2 spot at 63,000 in sales, and Ringo Shiina‘s newest landed at #3. Ikimono Gakari (#7), SPEED (#8), and Yui Aragaki (#10) also had new releases in the top ten.

Meanwhile, news was also made with the latest posthumous release from ZARD, “Sunao ni Ienakute.” Ranked 5th on the charts, it became ZARD’s 43rd top-ten single, tying her for the current record with Southern All Stars, SMAP, and Ayumi Hamasaki. Originally released as a B-side on her second single back in 1991, “Sunao ni Ienakute” has been recorded as a new version with singer Mai Kuraki featured in the song’s chorus.

On the album charts, the #1 spot was taken by “Trash We’d Love” from The HIATUS, a new band formed by ELLEGARDEN‘s Takeshi Hosomi. It sold 80,000 copies, beating out Ken Hirai‘s new album, “Ken’s Bar II.” Other artists in the top ten were May J. (#4), Yoko Kanno & The Seatbelts (#6), Yuna Ito (#7), and MEG (#10).

Police Investigates Ayumi Hamasaki For Last Month’s Publicity May 23rd, 2009

Police Investigates Ayumi Hamasaki For Last Month's Publicity

Ayumi Hamasaki fans should remember that last month, Ayu made a surprise visit in Shibuya to promote her book, “Ayu no dejideji nikki 2000 – 2009A”, and new album, “NEXT LEVEL”. Unfortunately, the police are investigating the publicity since they’re accusing of Ayu and her manager for not obtaining proper permits prior to the promotion.

About 8,000 fans appeared to see Ayu which lead to temporary blocked roads. On top of that, Ayu made surprise visits in to other stores by car before reaching 109 in Shibuya. Despite the fact that promotion took place in stores, the police argues that Ayu’s manager should’ve obtained a permit for using the roads. As a result, the police have forwarded the matter to the prosecutor to interrogate Ayu’s manager and herself.

It’s easy to understand the police’s concern for the public safety; however, there were no reports of injuries. It’s highly unlikely that any of the business owners in Shinbuya would be upset about the surprise visit from Ayu since they could have received higher sales that day. So why would the police make such a big deal about this?

Is it for money? Is it to show that even celebrities have to follow the law? Or is it plain ignorance? Whatever the reason is, the police certainly have done one thing – more free publicity for Ayu.
