Japanese PSN To Make Manga Available For PSP Within A Year

Imagine being to read your favorite manga titles in digital format no matter you go. Now try to imagine reading them on your PSP. Not so easy to read, is it?

Well, Sony just announced that the Japanese PSN (PlayStation Network) will begin carrying manga for downloading within a year. With a screen resolution of 480 x 272, it’s curious to see how one can really read a manga on the PSP. How many PSP owners won’t mind having to use the control pad or analog stick to navigate the PSP to read a manga?

Only time can tell, or maybe Sony has something in mind. Perhaps you would see one or two panels at a time? Whatever the technique, it better be one that makes sense.

Defend Yourself With Hello Kitty July 9th, 2009

Defend Yourself With Hello Kitty

Sanrio has been making plenty of cute Hello Kitty products for many years; however, this is probably the first time that the company made a product you can use to defend yourself with.

Of course, it’s probably fake as well. It’s true that Sanrio does make a lot of products that include television, cd player, portable DVD players, bluetooth headsets, and more. However, a taser is not likely something Sanrio would produce.

Why? It’s not really cute. Okay, so maybe that’ not a good reason. Even if Sanrio did make a taser, the company wouldn’t place the Hello Kitty logo over the ridge.

Japan To Study Heavy Rain Using GPS July 4th, 2009

Japan To Study Heavy Rain Using GPS

Imagine being able to evacuate a city that’s in a serious flood zone within at least an hour before a heavy rain storm arrives to submerge the streets and buildings underwater. That’s what the Japan Meteorological Agency wants to do by doing a major research involving the use of GPS.

The purpose of the research to see if they can track localized torrential storms by analyzing water vapor via GPS. You may already know that GPS uses radio waves from satellites to antennas; it tracks seismic changes using this method. However, whenever there’s large amount of water vapor in the area it interferes with the communication between the satellites and antennas; thus, causes some errors.

With the aid of the Meteorological Research Institute, the research will help meteorologists predict the outbreak of heavy rain more accurately. The research will end in March 2010. If successful, meteorologists will be able to predict where heavy rainfalls will hit between one to five hours ahead of time. This can help people prepare for flooding before they become unexpected victims.

Imagine how many lives will be saved and how much damage can be reduced once the research has been shared with the rest of the world.

Sony’s New Hope: PS2 Emulation on the PS3 July 1st, 2009

Sony’s New Hope: PS2 Emulation on the PS3

A quietly filed patent appears to reveal Sony is planning or at least considering the possibility of reintroducing full PS2 emulation to the PS3, which initially shipped with a special chip for this purpose, though this was later removed in a fit of marketing genius by Sony in order to cut costs…

The inferred plan is suggested by Sony’s American operation recently filing a patent which describes a method by which the PS3’s “Cell” processor could emulate the PS2’s “Emotion Engine”, apparently without the need for special hardware.

The PS3 initially shipped with such functionality provided in hardware, and this was a key selling point, but with later revisions of the console the chip was dropped and full PS2 backward compatibility subsequently lost.

Whether this was a wise move is probably debatable, particularly considering how tenaciously the PS2 appears to be resisting its demise, but it seems the whole problem may be avoided if a firmware update could simply add the required emulation features in software and so allow the PS3 to play PS2 games once more.

Of course, there is also the possibility that the patent is but one of the many thousands filed all the time by a large technology company speculatively with no immediate hopes of release.

Via Gigazine.

It seems possible that Sony either planned from the start to re-add emulation via software when they dropped PS2 hardware emulation, or that they have been so stung by the refusal of the PS2 to be quickly and cleanly superseded that they felt they had to develop a cleaner solution.

In any case, PS3 owning gamers will appreciate being able to finally dump their PS2s completely if ever that day comes…

Anime Inspired Cell Phones! May 25th, 2009

Anime Inspired Cell Phones!

There seems to be a new trend in Japan for releasing Anime related cell phones. We all know the consumerative nature of Otaku’s since many of you are Otaku! Im actually quite surprised to see the Eden of the East phone because when i started watching the show is said to myself “That’s a cool phone!” But it seems a little impractical and too big to fit in a pocket but still nice especially if it contains 8.2 Billion Yen! The EVA phone however is more to my liking as far as design wise. very low key as they say it doesn’t scream anime Evangalion as far as the other products from the series!
